Distribution of health services within the RBAOC.
The health services network in the RBAOC consists of a total of 21 establishments (11 CPT1, 8 CPT2, 1 CDI and 1 SRI) located in 19 localities. Type 1 Popular Clinics have indigenous personnel trained in primary health care, but they do not have the necessary medicines and supplies. Type 2 Popular Clinics are establishments attended by doctors and local health teams with nurses, microscopists and primary care agents. These health posts have the capacity to hospitalize patients and address most of the health problems in the area, but currently none have a doctor or the necessary access to supplies and medicines. The Integral Diagnosis Center (CDI) and the Integral Rehabilitation Room (SRI) are health establishments that are part of the Barrio Adentro Mission, attended by Cuban personnel. Currently the only health center that is operating in the entire Alto Orinoco is the CDI of La Esmeralda, attended by the Cuban health team, which only has one doctor. The inability of the Alto Orinoco health network is such, even to attend to the most basic health problems, that any medical emergency must be referred to Puerto Ayacucho by air.
